What are the procedures for leaving Ivory Coast?
If you finish your trip to the Ivory Coast and are ready to leave the country, here are the general procedures you should follow:
1. Check Your Travel Documents
Ensure that you have all the necessary travel documents, including:
- Your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your departure date.
- Visa or Entry Documentation
- Yellow Fever Certificate
- Make sure your visa is still valid until the date of your departure. Otherwise, you will be charged a fine for overstaying your visa.
2. Customs Declaration
Confirm Departure Tax
Make sure you have the required funds available in the local currency (CFA Franc) or the currency accepted at the departure airport to pay for the departure tax.
Currency
Residents traveling outside the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) must declare any amount exceeding 2,000,000 CFA Francs (~4,000 USD) in CFA Francs or foreign currency.
Non-residents (tourists) can export up to 500,000 CFA Francs (~1,000 USD) or the equivalent in foreign currency without special approval.
3. Check your belongings
Ensure you are not carrying prohibited items. You should note that there are specific items that are banned from exporting, such as illegal drugs, weapons, explosives and ammunition, knives and deadly weapons, plants and plant materials, soil, fertilizers, or pornographic material.
4. Security and Customs
Check-In
Arrive at Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport in Abidjan (or another departure point) with sufficient time to check in with your airline. Requirements like proof of onward travel or return tickets may be checked.
Be prepared to show your travel documents, tickets, and any items you purchased during your stay.
Health Screening
Comply with any medical monitoring measures, such as temperature checks or health declarations, which may still be in place depending on current regulations.
5. Board Your Flight
Proceed to your departure gate and board your flight as instructed by the airline. It is advisable to follow the instructions and guidelines provided by your airline for a smooth departure process.
Additional Tips:
- Arrive 3 hours early for international flights.
- Keep your passport, boarding pass, and receipts handy.
- Confirm visa/immigration compliance if you extended your stay.
- Carry some local currency (CFA francs) for last-minute airport expenses.
Since entry and exit conditions can change, contact the nearest Ivorian embassy or consulate or check with your airline for the latest requirements.
